چکیده

COMPOSITIONAL approaches to mobile accentuation of the Indo-European type derive the accent of words from the lexically specified accentual features of their constituent morphemes, together with the BASIC ACCENTUATION PRINCIPLE (BAP), which erases all accents but the leftmost one, and assigns an accent to the left edge of an unaccented domain.1 I propose here a compositional analysis in which BAP is a phrase-level process and stems default to the right by the OXYTONE RULE. I argue that zero grade ablaut is sensitive to the accents erased by the BAP, and therefore applies before it. In agreement with most compositional analyses, I distinguish between DOMINANT and RECESSIVE derivational suffixes. 2 COMPOSITIONAL approaches to mobile accentuation of the Indo-European type derive the accent of words from the lexically specified accentual features of their constituent morphemes, together with the BASIC ACCENTUATION PRINCIPLE (BAP), which erases all accents but the leftmost one, and assigns an accent to the left edge of an unaccented domain.3 I propose here a compositional analysis in which BAP is a phrase-level process and stems default to the right by the OXYTONE RULE. Intra-Paradigmatic Contrast in Arabic Verbal Morphology

Arabic verbs exhibit a morphologically conditioned stem ablaut which has been attributed in the past to an apophonic scale (Guerssel and Lowenstamm 1996; Ségéral 1997). I show here that this apophonic scale is unnecessary, and that Arabic ablaut can be attributed instead to maximized contrast along the dimension of morphosyntactic aspect, employing constraints motivated by Rebrus and Törkenczy ...

Accent in Proto-Indo-European Athematic Nouns: Antifaithfulness in Inflectional Paradigms

Melissa Frazier: Accent In Proto-Indo-European Athematic Nouns: Antifaithfulness in Inflectional Paradigms (Under the direction of Jennifer L. Each accent pattern is distinguished by either alternating stress or vowel quality between " weak " forms (nominative, accusative, vocative) and " strong...

The agent suffixes as a window into Vedic grammar*

The two Indo-Iranian agent suffixes -tarand -tárcan be reconstructed for IE as preaccenting *-torand accented *-téron the evidence of their Greek cognates. In addition to accent and ablaut, they differ in three other respects: (1) semantically, (2) morphotactically with respect to their constituency in the word, co-occurrence with other affixes, compounding potential, and whether they allow the...

Ablaut and reduplication in Dakota: Revisiting the phonology-morphology relationship

In this paper I present a solution for two intertwined puzzles in the morphophonology of Dakota. There is an active ablaut process in Dakota; this process is lexically conditioned in ordinary circumstances, but just in reduplicative contexts the process becomes partially phonologically conditioned. Another challenge that arises from consideration of this ablaut puzzle is that epenthetic vowels ...

The effect of accent on the acoustic cues to stop voicing in Radio News speech

Data from three acoustic cues to stop voicing is analyzed for the effect of phrasal accent in a corpus of read radio news speech from a single speaker of American English. The results show that VOT, Closure Duration and F0 are significant cues to voicing for stops in this corpus, though the acoustic patterns vary by place of articulation. There is a significant effect of phrasal accent on each ...
